Course Contents:
  • Fundamentals of thermodynamics: systems and processes; states and laws; variables, functions and potentials, phases.
  • Phase equilibria: P-T diagrams for unary systems; binary systems and simple solution models; binary T-C phase diagrams; multicomponent systems and advanced solution models. reaction thermodynamics.
  • Computational thermodynamics tools: modules and user interfaces; calculation of thermodynamic functions; computation of free energy vs. composition diagrams and T-C phase diagrams; ternary and multicomponent systems; metastable phases.
  • Kinetics: Fick's laws and their applications to processing of steels.
  • Phase Transformations: driving force, nucleation, growth and coarsening; transformation rate and TTT diagrams; moving boundary problems.
  • Applications of kinetic databases and tools for carburization, nitriding, homogenization, and aging; computation of transformation rates
About the Instructor: Dr. Subhradeep Chatterjee is with the Department of Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering at IIT Hyderabad. His research interests include phase transformations and microstructure-property correlations during materials processing. He applies principles of materials thermodynamics and kinetics to complements materials characterization techniques to develop an improved understanding of the underlying phenomena.

Instructor Profile
Knowledge of basic thermodynamics and calculus, and only very basic familiarity with coding, say, in MATHEMATIC, MATLAB or python.
